ADHD teens and children are often subjected to painful situations in school as teachers and classmates fail to comprehend their struggle to cope simultaneously with themselves and their environment. An ADHD child will often "dig in his heels" in apparent defiance of a teacher or an adult. What is not understood is that the appearance of defiance is motivated more by confusion and fear than by a desire to be arbitrarily disobedient. Left to evolve on its own, this child's natural motivation to protect himself may actually develop into intentionally defiant behaviors, for the child learns (ironically in a school setting) that he can feel more in control by being oppositional.
